Brunello di Montalcino, Tenuta Greppo Annata, Biondi Santi
Region: Italy - Tuscany

HK$968 / Bottle

Biondi Santi releases both an Annata, or normale bottling, and a Riserva bottling, making both only in good vintages and the latter only in great. While the Annata derives from vines between the ages of ten and 15 years, the Riserva derives from older vines between 25 and 80 years of age. sourced primarily from the iconic, historic Greppo plot. Grapes for both wines are sourced primarily from the Greppo plot, which consists of stony galestro soil intermixed with tufaceous clay. Biondi-Santi’s trademark aromatics and acidity, however, is attributable to the vineyard’s altitude that ranges between 1,300-1,600 feet above sea level. Both the Annata and the Riserva undergo fermentation in traditional Slavonian oak for 18 days, followed by aging in large oak casks of 800 to 7,000 liters for a period of two to three years, and the Riserva is released six years after the harvest.

Tasting Note:
Antonio Galloni 96 points!
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is a real knock-out. Rose petals, mint, sweet spices and flowers are some of the first notes that open up in the glass. Almost indescribably beautiful, the 2010 is a classic, austere Biondi Santi Brunello built to age. Although the 2010 is going to require considerable patience, its pedigree is quite apparent today. The 2010 constantly changes in the glass, revealing different shades of its multi-faceted personality, while the long, saline-infused finish is a thing of real beauty.

Tasting Note:
James Suckling 94 points!
Aromas of currants, fresh herbs and blackberries with hints of wet stones and licorice follow through to a full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. This is very tight and muscular. Needs at least four to five years to soften. The legend lives.

Tasting Note:
Jancis Robinson 18/20 point!
Intense mid ruby. Very tight and closed yet showing depth of fine-perfumed, earthy cherry. Embryonic Sangiovese palate that is Burgundian in stature and weight. Precise and perfectly balanced. Really sleek and fine and with fine powdery tannins, but not ready by far. 13.5% Drink 2018-2036
