Giaconda, founded by Rick Kinzbrunner, released its first wines in 1987. The winery and vineyards are located in Beechworth in northeastern Victoria. Those produced wines have a super-cult status and, given the tiny production, are extremely difficult to find; they are sold chiefly through restaurants and by mail order. All have a cosmopolitan edge befitting Rick Kinzbrunner´s international winemaking experience. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are made in contrasting styles: the Chardonnay tight and reserved, the Pinot Noir more variable, but usually opulent and ripe. Tasting Note:
James Halliday 98 points! Hand-picked, whole bunch-crushed and basket-pressed, fermented in French oak (30% new), 100% mlf, matured for 22 months, not filtered. Pale, bright straw-green; the bouquet is very complex, yet subtle due to emphemeral husky/creamy nuances. The sheer power of the palate is of a category unique to Giaconda (and perhaps Leeuwin Estate), for it is on you before you realise it, the acidity bright and fresh notwithstanding the mlf.Tasting Note:
Jancis Robinson 18/20 points! Very pale. Interesting, layered, lightly matchstick nose. Smoke and exotic fruit but an undertow of really interesting terroir. So different from the Giaconda Chardonnays of old. Great balance, and a bit more fruit than some. Crystal clear. Lots to chew on – a bright future.Tasting Note:
Jeremy Oliver 97 points!
